Doctors at PGI Set Up ‘Open OPD’ Amid Protest Over Kolkata Doctor’s Death. As doctors at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research continued their agitation against the alleged sexual assault and killing of a resident doctor in Kolkata, they opened an ‘Open OPD’ at the protest site – a unique form of protest.
The doctors, agitating for more than ten days, are taking all measures to see that their movement for justice does not hamper the treatment of the patients. In fact, while they are marching in the procession, the doctors have arranged to treat the patients there itself, so no one will need to wait and specially those who come from far-flung areas get medical aid without any delay.
“This ‘Open OPD’ ensures that our responsibilities as doctors are not neglected even as we demand justice,” said one of the protesting doctors. “We are here to serve, and we will continue to do so while raising our voices for a safer environment for medical professionals.”
Patients have also welcomed the initiative, saying that the commitment of the doctors to treating them while protesting has allayed their fears. “Doctors are rendering great service to us by continuing to see patients and, at the same time, fighting for their rights,” said another patient.
The agitation, triggered by the unfortunate death of an internship doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has only picked up momentum. Medicos have been adamant about continuing their agitation until justice is delivered and the Central Protection Act enforced.
