Suggests to Form a Protocol for Referral for Optimum Utilisation of Resources at PGIMER

In view of the consistent surge in numbers and the disease already peaking, a high powered committee met under the chairmanship of Prof. Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER to discuss the referral of COVID-19 positive cases to PGIMER on 10th July here at PGIMER.
The meeting held in pursuance of the directions of V.P.Singh Badnore, Governor Punjab and Administrator, UT Chandigarh. It was participated by Prof. B.S.Chavan, Director-Principal, GMCH, Sector 32, Prof. G.D.Puri, Dean (Academic) PGIMER, Mr. Kumar Gaurav Dhawan, DDA PGIMER, Dr. Suraj Bhan Kamboj, DGHS, Govt. of Haryana, Dr.G.Diwan, DHS, Chandigarh Administration, Dr. Avneet Kaur, DHS, Govt. of Punjab and Dr. Rajeev Wadhera, Senior Consultant, Govt. of Haryana.
With an intent to facilitate the patients with moderate or severe symptoms, the Committee decided to form a protocol for referring patients from Punjab and Haryana to avoid any harassment to the patients.
To facilitate the patients further, a nodal officer would be appointed by PGIMER, who would act as a single point of contact for the referring doctor to brief about the patient and hence, enable PGIMER to make the necessary arrangements beforehand to accommodate the patient.
Another suggestion put forward was to form a WhatsApp group of doctors from PGIMER as well as from states for necessary consultations in case of any emergency situations.
Further, Director PGIMER urged Prof G.D.Puri, Dean (Academic), PGI to form a committee of faculty members from various departments including Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonary Medicine which can act as a think tank for the doctors from Punjab & Haryana to meet with the emergency situations.
With a focus to optimally utilize the resources, it was agreed that the nodal officers from the neighbouring states of Punjab & Haryana and the nodal officer from PGIMER would mutually consult and unanimously take a call whether a patient needs to be treated/managed in the healthcare facility of the respective states or any immediate intervention is required.
The Committee concluded that the patients from the states of Punjab and Haryana would be referred to PGIMER only in case the healthcare centres of these states are unable to treat the patient. Another important decision taken by the Committee comprised that once the patient(s) is out of danger and can be managed at their parent state(s), the patient would be referred back to the respective state(s) after coordinating with the concerned nodal officer.
