PGI Chandigarh launched first of its kinds clinic in India
A hope to Amputees with Amputee Clinic at PGI Chandigarh. A doctor amputates the limb, but the journey after the amputation is more challenging. PGI Chandigarh yet again worked out something for these people which has been missing for the last 40 years.
It’s an Amputee Clinic. A First of its kind in India, Dr. M.S.Dhillon is one who with his team of different specialist doctors comes together and plans this clinic where all possible needs of an amputee can be met. Be it Financial, Prosthesis, Psychiatric, or anything. This Clinic would none less than a Hope to those who lose it all.

PGI Chandigarh Orthopedic department makes this phrase a reality. The intent is to send the Amputee as a near-normal functional human being to society.
Prof. Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER inaugurated the “PGI AMPUTEE CLINIC’, being set upto improve amputation patient care by providing collection of services under one roof and with significant coordination.
Prof. M.S.Dhillon, Head, Deptt. of Orthopaedics, Dr. Uttam Saini, Associate Prof., Dr Himanshu, Asstt. Prof., Dr Saumya Saxena, Asstt. Prof. (PMR) from Deptt. Of Orthopaedics, Dr. Aseem Mehra, Asstt. Prof., Deptt. of Psychiatry and Mrs. Manju Dhandapani from NINE, resident doctors, nursing officers, technical staff associated with the initiative.
Prof. M.S.Dhillon, Head, Deptt. of Orthopaedics, who spearheaded the initiative detailed, “This is the first of its kind clinic in the country and no such clinic exists elsewhere. For the last 1.5 years, we have combined all the specialties that help in patient care and rehab under one roof; we now have formalized this as PGI AMPUTEE CLINIC, comprising specialists from various departments ie Orthopaedics, PMR (Physical and Medical Rehabilitation), Occupational/ Physiotherapy, Prosthetists, Psychologists, and Nursing department, who had already been providing care, but as individual entities.”
“ Under one roof, managed by the Ortho Surgeon, we will help coordinate all of the specialists, under the Label of PGI AMPUTEE CLINIC. This will include comprehensive patient data and documentation. Surprisingly, except for 2 studies from PGI, no amputee data from India is available for the last 30 years.”
“We will also run “Amputee Schools” on the basis of the successful “Knee School” being run at PGI, where we propose to get amputees together to interact with each other and get collective counseling and understand issues faced by other similar cases.”, shared Prof. Dhillon
It was also informed that at these Amputee Clinics and Amputee Schools, Family counseling by Psychiatrists/Psychologists, PMR Specialists will also be done. Additionally, guidance would be provided in the form of printed booklets, Govt agencies, and websites that can help, along with coordination with the same, and give helpline details and contact nos. “A PGI helpline contact No +91-9599149380 and Facebook page has already been started, to help and guide amputees can be seen on PGI website, ” concluded Prof. Dhillon.
