Dr. Navdeep Bansal wins ‘Best Transplant Coordinator’ Award

Continuing with the tradition of creating benchmarks, PGIMER has won laurels again by winning the national award in the ‘Best Hospital’ category for its outstanding contribution towards the promotion of cadaver organ donation at a web-cast event, in view of COVID-19 pandemic, organized to celebrate the 11th Indian Organ Donation Day by NOTTO (National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization) at Nirman Bhawan in New Delhi today.

Hon’ble Union Health & Family Welfare Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, graced the event as the Chief Guest and Shri Ashwani Kumar Choubey, Minister of State Ministry of Health & Family Welfare was present on the occasion as the Guest of Honour with senior functionaries of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare present in good strength. Adding to the accolades was another milestone as Dr. Navdeep Bansal, working as Transplant Coordinator at PGIMER was also awarded ‘Best Transplant Coordinator’ award during the event. Another highlight of the event was the felicitation of the donor families whose magnanimous gesture of organ donation of their relatives was instrumental in saving precious lives.

Connected through web-cast, a parallel event was organized here at Kairon Block PGIMER, which was graced by Prof. Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER Prof. G.D. Puri, Dean (Academics), Prof. A.K. Gupta, Medical Superintendent cum Head, Deptt. of Hospital Administration, Mr Kumar Gaurav Dhawan, DDA, Mr. Kumar Abhay, FA, Prof. Ashish Sharma, Head Deptt. of Renal Transplant Surgery, Prof. H.S. Kohli, Head, Deptt. of Nephrology, Prof. Vipin Koushal, Addl. Medical Superintendent & Nodal Officer, ROTTO, Prof. Ashok Kumar, Addl. Medical Superintendent & Official Spokesperson, Prof. Kajal Jain, Deptt. of Anesthesia & Intensive Care along with representatives of ROTTO and Deptt. of Hospital Administration.

Dr. Amarjeet Kaur, Sr. Regional Director, Regional office for Health & Family Welfare, Chandigarh (Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of ndia) was present on the occasion as the Guest of Honour and presented the award to Prof. Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER for ‘Best Hospital’ as it was announced through web-cast at the national event at New Delhi.

It is the fourth time consecutively that PGIMER Chandigarh has won national award as ‘Best Hospital” for its contribution towards the deceased organ donation programme. Expressing his delight at the achievement, Prof.Jagat Ram, Director PGIMERstated, “It’s an honour to be acknowledged nationally for PGIMER’s contribution towards the promotion of the deceased organ donation programme for the fourth time in a row. The national awards as Best Hospital and Best Transplant Coordinator are a reiteration of the fact that we are on the right track and our multiple teams working in the field of Organ Donation and Transplantation have been able to make a difference through their consistent efforts.”

“We dedicate the ‘Best Hospital’ award to all the brave – heart donor families for their un-paralleled benevolence which helped saving hundreds of lives and in fact, sustain the deceased donation programme in PGIMER,” Prof. Jagat Ram added. Prof. A. K. Gupta, Medical Superintendent cum Head, Deptt. of Hospital Administration, PGIMER, expressed his sentiments.

“The tireless and incessant efforts by each one in the institute involved in the process of promotion, donation and transplantation has contributed immensely to enable the institute win this distinct honour since last 2016 onwards, which, in itself, is a huge success story.” “We feel honoured as well as all the more committed to carry forward the mandate at a faster pace,” stated Prof. Vipin Koushal, Nodal Officer, ROTTO PGIMER. However, the most emotional moment of the event came when Mr. Dharam Pal, husband of donor Rekha Rani (50 years), Mr. Partap Singh, father of donor Amandeep (11 years) and Mr. Amarjit Singh, brother of donor Satish Kumra (35 years) were felicitated for their brave-heart decision to donate the organs of their deceased family members.

They got a standing ovation from the house for their magnanimous gesture of Organ Donation of their deceased relatives impacted nine lives with the transplantation of liver, kidneys, pancreas and corneas. With tears brimming in his eyes, Mr. Amarjit Singh said,“Despite being no more, my brother is living on by helping five others continue with their lives, and their parents and all the lives that are being touched as a result”.
