Punjab Cabinet Clears Educators, BBMB, Races, Universities

Punjab Cabinet approves Special Educator Recruitment, New Law for Bullock Cart races, BBMB Security Shift, and Recognition for two private universities

The Punjab Cabinet has taken several important decisions in its latest meeting, aimed at improving education, protecting cultural traditions, strengthening state control, and expanding higher education. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, and Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian shared the details with the media.

3,600 Special Educators to Be Hired

The state government will recruit 3,600 special educators to teach children with special needs in government schools. Education Minister Harjot Bains said the aim is to ensure these children get the support they need in classrooms. Finance Minister Cheema added that teachers already working on contract will also be considered in this recruitment drive.

BBMB Security Back with Punjab Police

The Cabinet has decided to cancel the previous Congress government’s approval that allowed CISF to take over the security of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). This consent was given on October 21, 2021. Finance Minister Cheema said the Punjab Police will now continue to look after BBMB’s security. A special resolution will be brought in the upcoming Vidhan Sabha session to make this official. Cheema said the Punjab Police is capable and does not need central forces for such responsibilities.

Bullock Cart Races to Return with New Law

The Cabinet has approved bringing a new law to allow bullock cart races in Punjab. Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Khuddian said these races are part of Punjab’s traditional sports and were once a major attraction at the Kila Raipur Games. The Supreme Court had banned them, but the government will now introduce a law after studying the cultural and practical role of animals like bulls. The aim is to allow the races under proper rules.

Two Private Universities Recognized

Finance Minister Cheema said the Cabinet has approved recognition for two private universities in Punjab – Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) and Rayat Bahra University. He clarified that neither of them is located in Hoshiarpur, as was earlier reported. The move is expected to boost private investment in education and provide more opportunities for students.

Other Approvals

The Cabinet also approved the annual reports of two government departments as part of its regular administrative review.

These decisions reflect the government’s focus on inclusive education, cultural identity, state autonomy, and expanding higher education. More details and official announcements will be made in the coming days.
