Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Seeks to Quit as AAP Punjab Convenor to Assume Exclusive Role in Governance. Seeks a dedicated state convenor to further strengthen the leadership. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has sought to resign from his position as the convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the state to give an exclusive role to the task of governance. Speaking to media, CM Mann reiterated a full-time state convenor required for Punjab and suggested a need for a new face instead who would focus wholly upon AAP’s organizational role. His statement comes when it is the time of important by-elections in four constituencies of Punjab, due to be held on 13 November.
He also revealed that he is willing to relinquish the party role of AAP’s Punjab convenor and concentrate more on governance as Chief Minister.
Active on the By-Election Campaign Trail
In the by-election campaign, CM Mann is canvassing enthusiastically for AAP candidates, like Ishaan Chabbewal, son of MP Raj Kumar Chabbewal, who is contesting from the Chabbewal seat. On Sunday, Mann appealed to the voters to give a decisive mandate to Ishaan and assured constituents that he would attend to local issues immediately.
History of Mann’s Convenorship
Appointed as Punjab’s AAP convenor on 31 January 2019, replacing Balbir Singh, Mann retained the position even when he became Chief Minister after AAPs thumping victory in the 2022 assembly elections. The AAP National Convenor and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had also managed to keep both positions but feels now it is the time for dedicated party leadership at the state level.
The results will be declared on November 23 in the by-elections for Dera Baba Nanak, Gidderbaha, Barnala, and Chabbewal constituencies. The seats had fallen vacant as MPs Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Raj Kumar Chabbewal, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, and Gurmeet Singh Meet were elected.
