In a giant step to help the global Punjabi Diaspora, Punjab CM endows grand gesture for NRIs; unveils “Punjab Help Centre” at IGI Airport, New Delhi. The Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann called the inauguration exercise a red-letter day in the annals of the state’s history and asserted that Punjab is now the first state in the country to initiate such an exercise. The decision has only reiterated the commitment of the state government towards its NRI community—helping and facilitating. The centre will work day and night to help NRIs and other passengers who reach the terminal. More significantly, the centre has been provided two Innova vehicles to help passengers get local transportation to Punjab Bhawan and nearby areas.

He said that the centre would help passengers and their relatives in making enquiries regarding flights, connecting flights, hiring taxis, recovering lost luggage and other such services related to the airport. In case of any emergency, a few rooms in Punjab Bhawan, Copernicus Marg, would be available on an as-and-when-available basis. Helpline Number 011-61232182 has been established for assistance in case of need.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Mann has ordered a probe—impartial and thorough—into the involvement of supporting staff in the controversy related to wrestler Vinesh Phogat. He termed the episode as a severe jolt to the sporting fraternity and mentioned that it has gone deep into the psyche of millions of sports fans. Mann said that this investigation should be open because the public had lost all faith in the system. He said that the staff was remiss in allowing the wrestler’s weight to rise beyond prescribed limits, a very serious act of negligence.

The Chief Minister went on to underline how answers should be forthcoming for all the pertinent questions thrown up by this incident, adding that dealing with a minor difference in weight need not be a big problem, certainly not in games of this magnitude. Coming to another issue, he assured that the problems as a result of the free and easy entry of vehicles from Punjab into the national capital would soon be addressed, now that the Aam Aadmi Party was in command of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
