PGI Research unveils the benefits of early induction of Oxygen in patients

Like Rohit Sardana case, patient who are suffering COVID 19 and are mild symptomatic, they should be extra vigil on their SPO2 levels as little signs of Oxygen deprivation could further lead to devastating stage which is evidently seen these days in many patients. PGI Researchers proposed that Prophylactic Oxygen therapy could prevent the future possibilities of being critically sick due to COVID.

Today we are again realizing with more vigour the importance of a small invisible molecule identified by Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier in 1778, known as Oxygen. For the last one and a half year, humanity is facing one of its deadly pandemics ever due to a virus known as SARS-CoV2. Even with the use of the latest technological advents still, a large number of precious human life is lost daily due to this viral infection, and the patients are still desperately gasping for the small molecule oxygen.

A group of researchers from PGIMER, Chandigarh has scientifically emphasized the role of oxygen even with mild disease in one of their published articles (https://doi.org/10.1007/s12291-021-00967-0). COVID19 patients conspicuously suffer from a condition “Happy Hypoxia” or “Silent Hypoxia”, where there are few signs and symptoms of oxygen deprivation. But this low oxygen level condition leads to increased chances of reinfection from the virus shed from his/her own body. Increased infection with high viral load leads to increased chances of blood clotting which in turn blocks the blood vessels and reduces oxygen supply through blood vessels.

All these will lead to the activation of phenomena known as “Cytokine storm”, where the mildly patient suddenly land in a catastrophic situation of shock and systemic multiorgan failure. The authors suggested that monitoring for oxygen in patients of COVID19 and early administration of Oxygen will prevent dreadful complications and save precious human life.
